“I want to speak to a solicitor. I'd like Theodorous, please.”
At the police station you can
- Speak to a solicitor in private, free of charge, whatever your income. You can name Theodorous.
- Ask for someone to be told where you are.
- Read the rules the police must follow (the PACE Codes of Practice).
- Ask for an interpreter if you need one, and medical help if you are unwell.
- Have an appropriate adult with you if you are under 18 or vulnerable.
Before you answer questions
- Wait until you have had legal advice. Asking for a solicitor never makes you look guilty.
- The interview is recorded and can be used in court. What you say, and what you don't, can matter later.
- Your solicitor will see what the police disclose and advise you on how to answer.
Invited to a voluntary interview?
- It is still an interview under caution, with the same consequences.
- Advice is free there too. Don't go alone; call us first.
Prefer to pay privately?
- You can instruct Theodorous privately for fuller preparation and one named solicitor throughout. Police-station attendance is usually a fixed fee agreed in advance.
